Yes, you can transform a young life. We don't just say that to get your attention. It is true.
For any child, summer camp can be a transformative experience; a chance to make new friends and to build confidence by trying something new. For the children in the 27260 zip code, one of the highest poverty neighborhoods in the state, camp is also a way to stay safe and well fed during long summer days and to combat the "summer learning slide." By investing $500 in High Point LEAP's academic summer camp, Camp Carey, you will fund one child for the entire summer.
"Going to Camp Carey was my first camp experience. I actually looked forward to waking up early in the morning and going to camp to learn and have fun," said middle-schooler Sahil. "I learned to plant seeds and make Tie-Dye shirts and be part of the Boy Scouts. I hope I can go back this year!
Last summer, 60 students like Sahil built lasting friendships as they learned new words and tried out unfamiliar roles. One week, students were scientists concocting their own slime recipes; the next they were entrepreneurs, tasked with designing their own product and writing a sales pitch for the class. One hot afternoon in July, students built solar ovens out of shoeboxes and aluminum foil, and waited excitedly as their s'mores cooked in the hot sun. For many students, it was their first experience as an engineer, scientist or entrepreneur; professions usually out of reach, but camp makes them possible!
